Guidelines for parents
Directives

All staff and coaches involved with Leicester Lions Juniors are anxious to follow the Directives as laid down by the Rugby Football Union. We believe that emphasis must be geared towards the improvement of individual skills through purposeful and enjoyable activity with the objective of achieving the correct balance between coaching and competition.
All of our coaches attend the new RFU Coach Education Courses which have been designed specifically to give coaches the opportunity to gain an understanding of coaching at levels so that all in their charge are coached safely.

Leicester Lions RFC fully complies with the Rules, Laws, playing restrictions and Child Protection guidelines laid down by the RFU.

Conduct

We believe that for players and spectators alike to enjoy the game, we all follow a set of guidelines regarding conduct.

Players conduct

We ask that all our players should:

  • Play for the 'fun of it' not just to please your parents or coach.
  • Play by the laws. Cheating invites foul play and builds a lasting bad reputation for yourself, your team or club.
  • Never argue with the referee's decision. Let your captain or coach ask any necessary questions.
  • Be attentive at all training and coaching sessions.
  • Control your temper - no 'mouthing off'. Verbal or physical abuse of team mates, opponents or match officials is not acceptable.
  • Work equally hard for yourself and your team - your team's performance will benefit and so will your own.
  • Be a good sport. Applaud all good play, whether by your team or by your opponent.
  • Treat all players as your yourself would like to be treated. Don't interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of any player.
  • Rememer that the aims of the game are to have fun, improve your skills and feel good. Don't be a 'show off' or always try to get the most points.
  • Co-operate with your coach, team-mates and opponents, for without them you don't have a game.
  • REMEMBER, SELF DISCIPLINE IS A FINE AND NOTICABLE QUALITY TO POSSESS.

Parents conduct

We ask that all parents should:

  • Not force an unwilling child to participate in sports.
  • Remember that children are involved in rugby for their enjoyment, not yours.
  • Be realistic about your childs' abilities; do not push them towards a level that they are not capable of achieving.
  • Provide positive verbal feedback both in training and during the game. Remember that persistent, negative messages will adversely affect the players' and referee's performance and attitude.
  • Encourage your child always to play by the rules. Cheating encourages aggression.
  • Teach your child that honest effort is as important as victory, so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
  • Remember that children learn best by example. Applaud good play by your team and by members of the opposing team.
  • Not publicly question the referee's judgement and never his/her honesty.
  • Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from children's sporting activities.
  • Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give of their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child.
